Why Polycarbonate for Machine Guarding
Polycarbonate is the standard choice for guarding that operators interact with. It is dramatically more impact resistant than acrylic, so it flexes and absorbs a strike instead of shattering into sharp fragments. It is transparent, which means operators and maintenance staff can see the process without removing the guard — a guard that has to come off to do the job is a guard that ends up left off. And because polycarbonate is electrically insulating and will not corrode, it works around energized equipment and in washdown or chemical environments where metal guarding struggles.
For applications where flame resistance matters, we fabricate from flame retardant (FR) polycarbonate. General-purpose (GP) polycarbonate is available where FR is not required.
Guards We Fabricate
- Point-of-operation guards — shields at the working area of a machine.
- Rotating equipment guards — covers for belts, pulleys, shafts, couplings, and fans.
- Electrical panel shields — insulating barriers over energized components.
- Perimeter and barrier panels — flat or formed panels for machine enclosures and cells.
- Replacement guards — rebuilds of broken, yellowed, or discontinued OEM guards.
- Hinged and removable access covers — formed panels with cutouts for access points.
Replacing a Broken or Yellowed Guard
Replacing existing guarding is one of the most common jobs we take. Older acrylic guards crack and craze; polycarbonate guards eventually yellow and lose clarity with UV exposure. In either case we can reproduce the part. Send us dimensions and a photo, mail us the broken original to copy, or bring it to our Tulsa shop. You do not need engineering drawings — a dimensioned sketch is usually enough.
How Parts Are Made
Guards are CNC cut from polycarbonate sheet, including any slots, holes, radii, and cutouts your application needs, then precision formed on a brake for bent profiles. Because there is no welding, grinding, or finishing involved, custom polycarbonate guarding is typically faster and more cost-effective than an equivalent metal fabrication.
A Note on Safety Requirements
PECOT fabricates guards to your specification. Determining the correct guard design, material thickness, and mounting for a specific hazard is the responsibility of the equipment owner or their safety engineer, since it depends on the machine, the hazard, and the applicable standards for your facility. If you tell us the requirements you need to meet, we will fabricate to them — and if you are unsure about thickness for a given application, call and we will talk it through.
