The Material
Flame Retardant and General-Purpose Polycarbonate Sheet
We fabricate from two grades of polycarbonate sheet depending on your application requirements:
- Flame Retardant (FR) grade — self-extinguishing, UL94-rated performance depending on thickness. Used where ignition resistance is required near heat sources, electrical components, or in classified areas.
- General-Purpose (GP) grade — high impact resistance, electrically insulating, non-corrosive, and transparent. Used where flame retardancy is not required but durability, weight, and cost advantages over metal are the priority.
We source from multiple suppliers to ensure availability and competitive pricing. Material grade is confirmed at the quoting stage based on your application requirements.

Why It Matters
Six Advantages Over Metal Fabrication
Significant Weight Reduction
Polycarbonate is approximately 50% lighter than aluminum and up to 85% lighter than steel. This reduces installation labor, structural load requirements, and shipping costs — especially for large panels or covers.
Flame Retardant Performance
FR grade polycarbonate offers UL94-rated flame retardant performance depending on material thickness. It is self-extinguishing and resists ignition — critical for guards and covers near heat sources or in classified areas.
Electrically Insulating
Unlike steel or aluminum, polycarbonate is an electrical insulator. It exhibits arc-resistant properties depending on application — making it suitable for guards and covers in electrical and high-voltage environments.
Transparent — or Opaque if You Prefer
Clear polycarbonate allows operators to visually inspect equipment status, indicator lights, and wiring without removing guards or opening enclosures. This improves safety and reduces downtime during inspections. We also fabricate in opaque black where you need to conceal internals, cut glare, or match existing equipment.
Corrosion Resistant
Polycarbonate does not rust or corrode. It performs reliably in wet, humid, salty, and mildly chemical environments where painted or bare metal would degrade — reducing maintenance and replacement frequency.
Lower Fabrication Cost
Custom polycarbonate components are significantly less expensive to fabricate than equivalent welded or machined metal boxes. CNC cutting and brake bending require no welding, grinding, or finishing operations.
Application Guidance
When to Use Polycarbonate vs. Metal
Polycarbonate is an excellent choice for many industrial applications — but not all. Understanding the tradeoffs helps you specify the right material the first time.
Ideal Use Cases for Polycarbonate
- Electrical component guards and covers requiring insulation
- Enclosure components where visual inspection is needed
- Covers for panels and terminals in classified or hazardous areas
- Guards for rotating or moving equipment
- Lightweight covers where reducing load matters
- Environments with moisture, humidity, or mild chemical exposure
- Applications where metal corrosion is a recurring maintenance issue
- Prototypes or short-run custom parts where metal tooling cost is prohibitive
- Replacement of expensive legacy metal enclosures with non-structural requirements
Limitations to Consider
- Not a structural material — not suitable for load-bearing applications
- Not UL-listed as a complete enclosure — individual component performance only
- Not NEMA-rated — do not specify for NEMA-certified enclosure requirements
- Not suitable for sustained high-temperature environments above ~240°F
- Not resistant to strong solvents, ketones, or aromatic hydrocarbons
- Not appropriate where rigid compliance with a listed enclosure standard is required
- Arc-resistant properties are application-dependent — consult an engineer for critical electrical applications
